Best Time to Visit Topkapi Palace: Time of Day, Crowds & Opening Hours

For most visitors, the best time to visit Topkapı Palace is at opening on any day except Tuesday, when the palace is closed. The month matters less, so choose it for your Istanbul trip as a whole.

This guide covers the opening hours and closed days, which time of day to go, how busy Istanbul gets month by month, and the summer night visits. If your dates are already fixed, use the date checker below to see whether the palace is open on your day.

Updated October 2026

The short answer

Topkapı Palace is open all year except on Tuesdays, New Year’s Day and the first day of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr), although ticket-office hours can change with the season. The time of day you arrive matters more than the month, and for most visitors the best time is at opening, 9 a.m.

Every visitor passes an airport-style security check that no ticket or tour skips, and the wait is usually shortest soon after opening. Much of the visit crosses open courtyards and terraces, so in July and August an early start keeps you out of the hottest hours. A full visit with the Harem takes about three hours. From October 13, 2026 until the palace announces new hours, the ticket offices close at 5 p.m., and the palace publishes no closing time for the grounds. To see everything, start no later than early afternoon.

If you are still choosing dates, pick the month for Istanbul as a whole. May, June and September offer the best overall balance for sightseeing on foot, with average highs of about 22 to 27°C and far fewer rainy days than in winter. May is the mildest and June has the longest days; September is warmer and drier than May but busier in the city. October is mild too, but almost as busy as July. For smaller crowds, January to March are among the quieter months for sightseeing in Istanbul, and the palace stays open, but they are cold and often wet.

Once your dates are fixed, the date checker below shows whether the palace is open that day.

Opening hours and closed days

Topkapı Palace follows the same weekly pattern all year: open six days a week and closed on Tuesdays. The National Palaces Administration, which runs the palace, publishes the hours of its ticket offices rather than a closing time for the grounds.

Topkapı Palace
Ticket offices open9 a.m.
Ticket offices close5 p.m. under the winter hours that start on October 13, 2026
Weekly closing dayTuesday
Holiday closuresNew Year’s Day and the first day of Ramazan Bayramı
Open onevery other national holiday, including all four days of Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha)

On October 7, 2026 the administration announced that the ticket offices at 14 of its palaces and museums, Topkapı among them, would close at 5 p.m. from October 13 for the winter, because the days are shorter. It had not published summer hours for 2027 when we checked, so if you are planning a late-afternoon visit next summer, check its Topkapı page first.

The holiday table holds one more rule: when a holiday is on a Tuesday, the palace stays closed. In 2027 New Year’s Day is a Friday, so the palace is closed that day, and the first day of Ramazan Bayramı is on Tuesday, March 9, when it is closed anyway. The palace is open on March 10 and 11 and on the Kurban Bayramı days of May 16, 17 and 19; May 18 is a Tuesday.

The palace can also close at short notice for high-level state visits. It is rare, and the main tour operator lists it as the reason it would cancel, which is one argument for a booking with free cancellation.

Which time of day to go

Plan on about three hours for the palace and the Harem together; that is the length of the guided tours on this site, and our guide to how long you need at Topkapı breaks it down. The Treasury, the Sacred Relics rooms and the Harem are indoors, but you walk between them across four courtyards and out onto the terraces of the Fourth Court, so a good part of the visit is in the open air.

At opening, 9 a.m. The simplest choice in every season. The airport-style security check on the way into the ticketed courtyards applies to every visitor, with or without a ticket or a tour, and the advice on the tour listings is to arrive near opening time, when the wait is usually shortest. In July and August it also puts the open courtyards and terraces in the cooler part of the day, and leaves the afternoon for the Grand Bazaar or the Basilica Cistern.

Early afternoon. A good second choice if mornings do not suit you. Start by early afternoon so the three hours fit before the ticket offices close, and in winter remember that the light goes early: Istanbul has a little over nine hours of daylight in December. Several tickets sold online state that re-entry is not permitted, so plan one continuous visit rather than a lunch break outside the walls.

On a hot day. In July and August Istanbul’s average high is about 30°C. Take the courtyards and terraces first thing, keep the Harem and the Treasury rooms for the warmer middle of the visit, and carry water.

On a wet day. Rain is most frequent from December to February. The palace is still worth visiting, because the main collections are under a roof, but the courtyard paving and the terraces can be slippery.

If you would rather have the timing and the route handled for you, a guided tour sets the start time and takes you past the ticket-office queue, though not the security check.

How busy Istanbul gets, month by month

Nobody publishes Topkapı’s visitor numbers by month, so the closest measure is the number of foreign visitors arriving in Istanbul, which the city’s Directorate of Culture and Tourism publishes every month. It describes the city, not the palace: it leaves out Turkish visitors and says nothing about which days or hours are busiest at the gate.

In 2025 the busiest months for foreign arrivals were July, October and August, each with about 1.85 to 1.88 million, and September was close behind. October is mild but not quiet: almost as many foreign visitors arrived that month as in July. The quietest months were January to March, at about 1.23 to 1.27 million, roughly a third fewer than in July. April to June sat in between.

Cruise traffic rises in the warmer months too. Foreign arrivals by sea at Karaköy, where cruise ships dock at Galataport, ranged from under 10,000 in January 2025 to about 82,000 in August.

The arrivals column counts foreign visitors entering Istanbul by air, sea and land in each month of 2025. It does not tell you how many of them visited Topkapı, or on which days.

The palace through the year

The palace, its collections and its route are the same in every month, while the outdoor part of the visit feels very different from season to season. From May to September the courtyards are mostly dry and the Fourth Court terraces look out over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus under long, bright days, but July and August are the hottest months, so the open courtyards are most tiring in the middle of the day. From November to March the gardens are bare, it rains on about half the days in December and January, and the short afternoons make an early start sensible for a different reason. Spring and fall sit between the two, with mild walking weather and more changeable skies in April and October.

Night visits in summer

In summer the administration has opened the palace for evening visits. In 2026 they ran on Saturdays from mid-June until September 13, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., starting and finishing at the Imperial Gate (Bab-ı Hümayun). The route took in the courtyards, the Harem, the Sacred Relics, the Treasury exhibition and the Fourth Court terraces, and night tickets were sold at the palace ticket offices for 4,000 Turkish lira for foreign visitors. The 2027 program had not been announced when we checked, so treat a night visit as a bonus if one is scheduled during your stay rather than a reason to choose them.

Choosing dates for Istanbul as a whole

The palace is open in every month, so choose your dates for Istanbul. May, June and September are the easiest months for days spent walking between Sultanahmet’s sights, with average highs of about 22 to 27°C and rain on five to eight days of the month; May is the mildest and June has the longest days; September is warmer and drier than May but busier. October is mild too, though almost as busy as July in the arrivals figures, and from November to March the city is quieter but cold and often wet.

How we know

  • Opening days, ticket-office hours, holiday closures and ticket prices. The National Palaces Administration’s page for Topkapı Palace at millisaraylar.gov.tr (Turkish and English versions), read on October 10, 2026: ticket offices open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., closed on Tuesdays, closed on New Year’s Day and the first day of Ramazan Bayramı, open on all other listed holidays, and closed when a holiday is on a closed day.
  • Winter ticket-office hours. The administration’s announcement of the 5 p.m. ticket-office close at 14 sites from October 13, 2026, as reported by Alomaliye on October 7, 2026.
  • Night visits. Anadolu Agency’s report of June 13, 2026, carried by TRT Haber and Milliyet, and the night-tour tariff on the National Palaces page.
  • Holiday dates for 2027. The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) calendar as reported by Dünya and CNN Türk: Ramazan Bayramı on March 9 to 11 and Kurban Bayramı on May 16 to 19, 2027.

Where this evidence stops

There is no count of palace visitors by month, day or hour. The arrivals figures describe foreign visitors to the whole city and leave out Turkish visitors, including school groups. The case for arriving at opening rests on the security check and the heat, not on a headcount.

One year is one year. The arrivals figures are for 2025. Ramadan was in March that year, which may have lowered that month’s figure, and the order of the busy months can change from year to year.

Climate averages are not a forecast. MGM’s figures are long-term averages for Istanbul measured at its own stations, not on Sarayburnu, the headland the palace stands on. For your own date, check a forecast.

Summer hours change by announcement. The administration publishes ticket-office hours by season and announces changes shortly before they apply. The winter hours are confirmed from October 13, 2026; check its Topkapı page for later dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of day to visit Topkapı Palace?

At opening, 9 a.m., for most visitors. Every visitor passes a security check on the way in, and the wait is usually shortest soon after opening. In July and August an early start also keeps you out of the midday heat on the open courtyards. If mornings do not suit you, start by early afternoon so a three-hour visit fits before the ticket offices close.

What are Topkapı Palace’s opening hours?

The ticket offices open at 9 a.m. and, under the winter hours that start on October 13, 2026, close at 5 p.m. The palace is open every day except Tuesday. The National Palaces Administration publishes ticket-office hours by season, so check its page before a late-afternoon visit in summer.

What day is Topkapı Palace closed?

Every Tuesday. It also closes on New Year’s Day and on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr), and a holiday on a Tuesday does not open it. It is open on the other national holidays, including all four days of Kurban Bayramı.

Is there a quieter time to visit Topkapı Palace?

No monthly visitor count is published for the palace. For Istanbul as a whole, January to March had the fewest foreign arrivals in 2025, about a third fewer than July, but those are also cold and often wet months. On any day, arriving at opening is the most reliable way to keep the security queue short.

Which months are busiest in Istanbul?

In 2025 July, October and August had the most foreign arrivals, each with about 1.85 to 1.88 million, and September was close behind. October is mild, but almost as many foreign visitors arrived then as in July.

Is Topkapı Palace worth visiting in winter?

Yes. The palace is open through the winter and the Treasury, the Sacred Relics rooms and the Harem are indoors. The courtyards and terraces are cold and often wet from November to March, and the days are short, so arrive at opening and dress for time outdoors.

How long do you need at Topkapı Palace?

About three hours for the palace and the Harem together, which is the length of the guided tours on this site. Allow longer if you want to see Hagia Irene as well or take the collections slowly.

Can you visit Topkapı Palace at night?

In summer 2026 the palace opened for night visits on Saturdays from mid-June until September 13, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., with tickets sold at the palace ticket offices. The 2027 program had not been announced when we checked.
