Two things people get caught by.

Last entry is not closing time. It is an hour before, and it is when they stop letting people through the Gate of Salutation. Turning up at 17:00 in summer technically works; you will have ninety minutes for a site that wants three.

The ticket office shuts earlier still — roughly thirty minutes ahead of last entry. If you are buying on the day rather than arriving with a booking, that is your real deadline, and it is a full ninety minutes before the gates close.

Seasonal hours can shift a little at the changeover in spring and autumn, and the palace occasionally closes at short notice for high-level state visits — one operator names exactly that among its cancellation reasons. Rare, but it happens.

Closing days

Every Tuesday, year-round. This is the one to plan around, and it has a knock-on effect: demand piles onto Monday and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are usually the easier days.

The first day of Ramazan Bayramı and the first day of Kurban Bayramı. Both move each year on the lunar calendar, so check against your dates rather than assuming.

If you are combining palaces, note the clash: Dolmabahçe closes on Mondays, Topkapı on Tuesdays. Neither day works for a two-palace itinerary — relevant if you have booked the Topkapı and Dolmabahçe combo ticket or are weighing them up on Topkapı vs Dolmabahçe.

When to actually arrive

Be there for 09:00. This is the single most useful piece of planning advice for Topkapı, and it is about the queue rather than the light.

There are two waits at the palace: the ticket office, which a booking removes, and an airport-style security screening at the Imperial Gate, which nothing removes. In the first hour after opening the security check runs at a few minutes. By late morning — coach groups, cruise passengers and late risers all converging — it is considerably longer. Full explanation on skip-the-line tickets.

Arriving at opening also buys you the Treasury and the Sacred Relics rooms before they get dense, and in July and August it is the only genuinely comfortable part of the day: the visit is walked almost entirely outdoors, across open courtyards with limited shade.

The late-afternoon alternative. If mornings are impossible, arriving around 15:30 in summer works: the coach groups are leaving and you still have three hours before closing. It does not work in winter, when 15:30 leaves you barely two hours and the last entry is 16:30.

Avoid late morning to early afternoon, roughly 11:00–14:00, which is peak in every season.

How long to allow

Two to three hours for the palace, three to four with the Harem. Add an hour on top if you are also doing Hagia Irene, and remember that re-entry is generally not permitted — several ticket products state this outright, so a lunch break outside the walls ends your visit.

That makes the arithmetic simple. In winter, arriving after about 14:00 means accepting you will not see everything; the Fourth Court terraces at the far end are what people run out of time for. More on pacing at how long you need at Topkapı.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Topkapi Palace opening hours?

Topkapı is open 09:00–18:30 in summer (April to October) with last entry at 17:30, and 09:00–17:30 in winter (November to March) with last entry at 16:30. The ticket office closes roughly thirty minutes before last entry.

What day is Topkapi Palace closed?

Tuesday, every week and year-round. It also closes on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı and the first day of Kurban Bayramı, both of which move each year on the lunar calendar.

What time is last entry to Topkapi Palace?

17:30 in summer and 16:30 in winter — an hour before the gates close. The ticket office shuts about thirty minutes earlier still, so if you are buying on the day your real cutoff is 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter.

What is the best time of day to visit Topkapi Palace?

At opening, 09:00. The security queue runs at a few minutes in the first hour and lengthens considerably from late morning. It is also the coolest part of the day in summer, which matters because the visit is almost entirely outdoors.

Is Topkapi Palace open on Sunday?

Yes. Topkapı is open every day except Tuesday, Sundays included. Because it is a weekend, expect it to be busier than a Thursday or Friday.

Can I re-enter Topkapi Palace on the same ticket?

Generally no. Several ticket products state explicitly that re-entry is not permitted once you leave the venue. Plan one continuous visit rather than breaking for lunch outside the walls.
