This is the option most visitors to Topkapı end up booking, and the reason is straightforward: it covers the palace and the Harem on one ticket, with a licensed guide, for close to what the combined museum ticket alone costs at the gate.

You meet in Sultanahmet Old Town and walk in together, past the ticket office and through the Gate of Salutation. Over roughly three hours the guide works through the Second and Third Courts — the Divan where the empire was administered, the imperial kitchens and their porcelain, the Treasury with the Spoonmaker's Diamond and the Topkapı Dagger — before turning into the Harem, the walled quarter where the sultan's household actually lived.

The Harem is the part that justifies a guide. It is a warren of some three hundred rooms with very little explanatory signage, and without someone to tell you which courtyard belonged to the Valide Sultan and why the eunuchs' quarters sit where they do, it reads as a run of beautiful tiled rooms and not much more.

Good to Know & Caveats

• Every visitor passes an airport-style security check at the Imperial Gate. No ticket, tour or pass skips it — arriving near opening time is the only thing that shortens it.
• Timed entry tickets expire within five to ten minutes of their slot, so arriving late for the meeting can mean forfeiting the entry.
• The palace can close at short notice for high-level state visits. This is rare, but it is the operator's stated reason for cancellation.
• Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays.
• You cannot join once the tour has started — the guide is inside the palace with the group.
