Istanbul: Topkapi Palace, Harem, & Basilica Guided Tour

4.5 (118 verified reviews)

About This Experience

A compact small-group tour of Topkapı Palace and the Harem, with the option to add the Basilica Cistern — the sixth-century underground reservoir a few minutes' walk away in Sultanahmet.

The palace portion covers the courtyards, the ceremonial halls and the Harem, with the guide concentrating on Ottoman court life: how the household was organised, who was allowed where, and what the layout of the courts tells you about how power worked here.

Adding the Cistern makes for a deliberate contrast — Byzantine engineering underneath the city, Ottoman ceremony above it — and it is the more interesting version of this tour if your schedule can take the extra hour.

Highlights

  • Guided tour of Topkapı Palace, the former residence of the Ottoman sultans
  • The Harem section, with the stories of the household that lived in it
  • Optional add-on to the Basilica Cistern, an underground Byzantine reservoir
  • Ottoman court life and Byzantine engineering explained side by side
  • Small-group format with an English-speaking guide

Good to Know & Caveats

  • Every visitor passes an airport-style security check at the Imperial Gate. No ticket, tour or pass skips it — arriving near opening time is the only thing that shortens it.
  • The Basilica Cistern is an optional add-on, not part of the base price. Check which option you have selected.
  • Once the tour begins the guide cannot take phone calls or wait for latecomers.
  • Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays.

Not Suitable For

  • Anyone who cannot manage stairs, if the Basilica Cistern option is selected

Meeting Point

Sultanahmet, near the Topkapı Palace entrance. The meeting point differs between the palace-and-Harem option and the option that adds the Basilica Cistern.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.5/5 by 118 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

The tour guide was knowledgable but it seemed a bit rushed considering the cost. Also there was some confusion as we thought we had booked the Basilica. This wasn’t clear on the booking.

Was a amazing place to visit so much bigger than i thought. Our guide Fatih Mahmet was informative and friendly at times was a bit hard to hear him with the noise but he was great. Definitely a place to visit

— rebecca, October

We skipped the enormous line to enter which was fabulous! Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave insights that google certainly couldn’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Basilica Cistern included?

Only if you select the option that names it. The operator sells a palace-and-Harem version and a version that adds the Cistern, at different prices. Entry to Topkapı Palace and the Harem is included on both.

Does this include the Harem?

Yes. The entry ticket to Topkapı Palace and the Harem is listed among the inclusions on both options, so you are not buying a separate Harem ticket on the day.

How long does it take?

Two to three hours depending on the option and the size of the group. The version with the Basilica Cistern sits at the longer end of that range.

Is the Cistern worth adding?

If your schedule allows it, yes — it is a short walk from the palace and offers a complete change of register from Ottoman ceremony to Byzantine infrastructure. It is also cool underground, which is welcome in an Istanbul summer.
